Women in American society seem more and more to be suffering a myriad distressing symptoms that markedly disrupt their ability to enjoy their lives. These symptoms range from exhaustion to difficulty controlling weight, from errant hormones to clouded comprehension and concentration, from moods askew to impaired immunity to aching, sub-functioning bodies.
Too often, once a woman, desperate to “feel like herself again,” at last seeks solutions to the problems plaguing her, finds herself shipped off to various and sundry specialists, each focused more on treating her symptoms than on uncovering and attending to their source.
Aviva Romm, a Yale-educated family physician, midwife, and herbalist, has taken a look at the list of issues assailing today’s woman with fresh eyes, has recognized their origins to be a simple, symbiotic system gone awry, and has recommended a revitalizing plan of action substantiated by science and validated by the steadily improving health of her clients in The Adrenal Thyroid Revolution: A Proven 4-Week Program to Rescue Your Metabolism, Hormones, Mind & Mood.
I just finished this excellent book and, filled with hope for my clients, as well as for my many faithful readers, felt compelled to share it. It’s filled with comprehensive research, interesting, real-life examples, easy to follow instructions, and closes with the following profound observation:
“Self-love is the most important ingredient. Self-love is the ingredient I see missing from most ‘diets,’ and it’s probably why most ‘diets’ fail. Self-love is the main ingredient in the replenish lifestyle. It’s the secret sauce to success, to feeling better, to reaching the moon and stars of your goals. And it’s neuroscience.”
That paragraph resonates with me, and brings another sentence to my remembrance:
“Love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12:31
A variety of thoughts rise to the surface of my mind in light of these statements, but I’ll keep what I share regarding them to this today – we women can be hard on ourselves, but what wonderful things might occur if we elect to appreciate and nourish and, yes, to love ourselves the way we appreciate and nourish and love, say, our little ones? What would happen within our bodies, within our souls? And what, then, might happen to the world around us and to the generations that follow after us should that love swell and billow and roll from us like ripples across a pond?
