Sarah York, Apprentice Midwife!

Meet the Amazing Sarah York! I’m very pleased to introduce Sarah York this morning, my newest apprentice!

When I made the decision to marry Steven and move to Colorado in the winter of 2013/2014, I fully understood I was relinquishing something I loved with all my heart – my work as a homebirth midwife with the most wonderful partner, the most wonderful apprentice, and the most wonderful clients I could hope for – to very possibly never enjoy such rich pleasures again.

Then, within the first two months in my new home, I met a family who desired me to serve as their midwife! That set me scrambling to secure my registration with the state and casting about for assistance. Pam Crowl, CPM, RM of A Colorado Midwife graciously extended both her friendship and her helping hand, as did Carmen Lackett, CPM, RM of Mother to Mother Midwifery some time later, and, little by little, one priceless expectant family at a time, a new and nourishing practice began to emerge.

I was pleased with the arrangement, but, as I love to teach and love the closeness of a preceptor/student relationship, I found I missed having an apprentice. However, having thus far only a very small practice – a practice too small, or so I thought, to be attractive to an apprentice – I chose not to pursue the acquisition of one.

But then, Sarah York materialized!

And, not only is Sarah smart, sensitive, hard-working, observant, intuitive, teachable, self-propelled, professional, remarkably gifted, and willing to learn within my modest offerings – she’s proven a pure joy to work with, and well-loved by my clients.

Join us now as Sarah tells us a bit about herself.

Sarah York

Sarah York of Colorado Springs is the newest addition to Birth @Home Midwifery Services. In addition to that, she’s co-owner of and birth doula with The Doula Circle; a Placenta Encapsulation Specialist; and a Henna Artist. Sarah is working on her Herbalism certification, and is now working under Kim as an apprentice learning the ancient art of midwifery.

Having worked as a doula and midwife assistant for over four years, Sarah has had the opportunity to attend nearly 100 births, and has seen birth in many of its variations. She believes that women have the right to choose where and how they birth, and that it’s the woman and the family who should be at the center of their own care, working with their providers to choose what’s best for their family. Ever since beginning her work with pregnancy and birth, Sarah has aspired to train as a homebirth midwife, however, it’s only now, after many years of living on-call and learning more about birth, that she feels prepared to commit to that goal. Birthwork is not for the faint of heart, to be sure!

Sarah is Co-Owner of The Doula Circle, which provides an abundance of services ranging from Birth to Postpartum. Sarah and her business partner, Bea Wilds, have worked hard to create a welcoming space for pregnant and birthing families, a place where they are cradled in community, supported by many, and able to find whatever they might need along their journey. Full circle support, every step of the way. Learn more about their unique model of Doula Care and their Birth Recovery Support which includes Bengkung Belly Binding.

Sarah has three children, who are her ultimate spiritual guides, encouraging her to learn, grow, and continually cultivate patience and joy. She lives on the west side of Colorado Springs with her supportive husband, children, and their dog, Bacon.
